Details: Interface

Upon Logging In the Home screen will be displayed on screen, which includes the three main components of the Explorer interface: the Map & Tools, Menu, Toolbar.

Map

The Explorer System uses the Google Maps API to publish maps on, and has additional features that remain wherever the Map is in view. These function the same as google.com/maps.

  • To pan or move around the Map, click and drag the mouse to navigate towards a desired view.

  • To zoom in or out, use the scroll button on the mouse. Alternatively, there are zoom buttons on the bottom right of the Map (+ zooms in, - zooms out), and a magnifying tool in the top left corner that allows users to click and drag to draw a box over an area and zoom into it.

  • Street View can be activated in the bottom right corner of the map. Click on the orange person icon and drag them to the location of interest on the Map. The streets where this feature is available will highlight in blue. Release the mouse over the location and the Street View will automatically load on screen. Click and drag the mouse to move the camera around. To exit, click the back arrow in the top left corner of the map.

  • Measure Tool calculates distances by drawing a measurement line on the Map. Activate the tool in the top right of the screen, then click on the location to calculate the distance from, and double-click where it should end. To view the distance click on the line and a box will appear with the distance in kilometres. To calculate the distance of a crooked line, click on the location to start the measurement and then again at every point of a desired bend. Double click at the end of the measurement to finish.

  • To change the Basemap, switch between the default Street Map or Satellite View in the top left hand corner of the Map. When you click on one, a dropdown box will allow you to toggle on either terrain for Street Map, or labels for the Satellite View.

Map Tools

Map Tools are available whenever the Map is in view, and includes features that aid in navigating and customising the Map view.

  • Mapping Layers display Datapack Variables as Census Area level Maps

  • Saved Views bookmark specific views of the Map, making it easy to quickly jump between areas. In the Toolbar's 'My Account' Saved Views can be set as the Default View when logging in.

  • Search and zoom to a specific area. Type in a place, address, or suburb and hit 'ENTER'

  • KML map layers can be managed, and uploaded and displayed on the Map

  • Zoom To All Locations is available when a Network is loaded, and will shift the map view to include all selected Locations.

The Menu is located on the right side of the screen, and houses the main Explorer features. Options with a '-->' symbol indicate they will take users to a new Menu, with the option to return to the previous menu is always displayed at the top of the Menu with a '<--' icon.
